Post for People: Local Service. Global Reach.—— Story of a postman in Altay posted on UPU’s official website

Recently, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) released a short video on the theme Post for People: Local Service. Global Reach. on its official website and YouTube, telling the touching story of Muhamaiti Bek, a postman in Altay, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

This is Altay, Xinjiang. Located in the northwest border of China, sparsely populated.

My name is Muhamaiti Bek. I am a postman of Burgin County Postal Branch.

I am responsible for the postal route of Hemuhanas in Jiadengyu Valley. The whole journey is about 500 kilometers.

The traffic is relatively busy in Hemuhanas in summer, while the road is much slippery in winter, because of snow. Avalanches are often encountered when snow is heavy, then it’s very dangerous to pass by.

I’ve been driving on this route for around eighteen years. Every twist and turn along this route, including the locations of the sharp bends and the stretches where l can pick up speed, are all remembered clearly in my mind. The students’ admission letters and ID cards, are all transported carefully and safely on the postal lorries.

When encountering snowing and freezing roads in Hemuhanas in July and August, the vehicles would not get passed. I will ride a horse to get there. It often takes me two or three hours to deliver the admission letters. Upon seeing our postmen, the students are delighted.

“The postman is here, so is my admission letter.” They are extremely happy, and we feel happy too. Because our job has been finished properly.

There are a lot of deliverymen nationwide, just as Muhamaiti Bek. They march on a postal route of 11.874 million kilometers. With responsibility and commitment, they make great efforts to ensure every parcel filled with hope and happiness will be delivered safely. Nowadays, the coverage rate of national township postal network and the access rate of mail services in established villages remain at 100 percent. For more than 3,000 border villages nationwide, the direct postal delivery has been achieved.

Where there is an inhabitant, there is postal service.
