Beijing, the capital of the People's
Republic of China and the national center for political, political, cultural, scientific
and educational activities and international exchanges, is both an ancient and a
cosmopolitan city overflowing with vigor and dynamism on its way towards modernization. 
Beijing is one of the birth places of
humankind. 500,000 to 700,000 years ago, the human ancestor
"Peking Man" used to live there. Being a capital for over 800 years, Beijing

as 3,000 years ago. The long--standing history has left numerous cultural relics of
extremely high aesthetic and cultural value The tourist attractions where the Chinese and
foreign tourists frequent include the Palace Museum (formerly known as the Forbidden
City) which is the world's largest and the most intact architectural complex, the
Temple of Heaven where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties worshiped heaven,
the Summer Palace which was both a palace and a garden for short stays by the emperors,the
Ming Tombs which is the resting place for 13 Ming emperors and the perilous Badaling and
other sections of the world--famous Great Wall, which will be ideal places of weekend
excursions for delegates during the UPU Beijing Congress in 1999.
As the capital of China, Beijing accommodates large numbers of political, mass media, artistic financial and business institutions. Along with economic development, the appearance of Beijing has undergone dramatic changes evidenced by a dense forest of high rises and complete municipal facilities,giving the city a graceful bearing modern and cncient.
Beijing is China's biggest window
of exchanges with the outside world, housing representative offices from over 100
foreign banks and nearly 3,000 foreign companies and successfully hosting such
events as the 11th Asian Games , the 4th World Conference on Women of the United Nations,
etc.. with its vigorous growth, prosperity and growing ties with the international
events.
