| In 2002, China Post has successfully
reached the pre-set goals of development and fulfilled various tasks. The
total turnover reached RMB 49.51 billion yuan, up 8.3% than the previous
year; the total revenue reached RMB 51.03 billion yuan, up 8.1% than the
previous year; the profit reached RMB 125 million yuan, doubling that of
the previous year; the all-staff labor productivity reached RMB 103.6 thousand
yuan per capita, up 12.7% than the previous year.
The annual turnover of delivery service reached RMB 18.258 billion yuan, up 4.64% than the previous year; the annual turnover of financial service reached RMB 19.917 billion yuan, up 20.09 than the previous year; and the annual turnover of philatelic service reached RMB 7.083 billion yuan, down 19.57% against the previous year. 10.60951 billion items of letter mail, 105.545 million parcels, 17.21386 billion copies of newspaper, and 1.143225 billion copies of periodicals were delivered. The balance of postal savings amounted to RMB 736.43 billion yuan. The quantity of international (including those to and from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) letter mail amounted to 52.328 million items, down 12.5% than the previous year; and express mail and parcels amounted to 4.473 million and 1.135 million items respectively, an increase of 6.2%, and 17.7% respectively compared with the same period of the previous year. China Post enhanced the construction of post routes in safeguarding postal operation, intensified the management of the whole network operation, and enabled the scale, the resource configuration of the post routes to be more fitted to the competition in the postal market and the requirement for increasing the economic returns of the enterprise. Now there are 39 thousand vehicles for production (including 14 thousand postal vehicles), 10 postal aircraft, and 10 postal ships nationwide. As for the postal equipment, there are 116 letter sorting machines, 113 letter sorting and facing machines, 585 sets of DM manufacturing system, 143 printed matter and parcel sorting machines, 55 newspaper and periodical distribution lines, 5,357 ATMs and 6,422 franking machines. There are now 76 thousand post outlets, among which 58 thousand are located in rural areas, 36 thousand can provide all-round postal services, and 18 thousand are branch offices that has been computerized. There are also 51 thousand postal shops selling newspaper, periodicals and books, and 20 thousand shops selling philatelic items. Among the 34 thousand postal savings outlets, 28 thousand have been connected to the computer network. The service of deposit and withdraw at different places is provided in 28 thousand terminals. 240 thousand groups of post boxes have been installed all over the country, and the number of on-time delivery outlets has reached 32.37 million. There are now 20 thousand townships that can provide postal savings service, and 275 prefectures/cities where the "185" customers service centers have been opened. In 2002, the business market was favorably expanded through developing more new services and increasing more letter mail services. The business volume of enterprise pre-stamped postcard, direct mails, advertisements sent through post and ceremony service reached 394.131 million, 1.63501 billion, 4.157652 billion and 2.037 million items respectively, while the weight of direct delivery service reached 1.44 million tons. 2.279 mobile users of China Unicom were registered through post. As an agency of telecom business, the turnover reached RMB 680.407 million yuan. China Post also launched various campaigns to promote cultural and ideological progress, which, at the same time, helped to improve substantially the enterprise efficiency, the social effect and the quality of the employees. In 2002, 143 work units from the postal sector were commended by some related departments of the Central Committee of CPC, 766 were cited as provincial level model units (units cited for cultural and ideological progress), and 942 were named as prefecture/city-level model units. Over 90% of the county-level bureaus were commended by the local Party Committees and governments, and 9 work units and 13 individuals were awarded the National "May 1st" Labor Medal and Certificate of Merit. Besides, the Shanghai "Kiosk Chains Management" was awarded the 2nd prize during the nationwide appraisal of new achievements in management modernization conducted in 2002. Well received by the society, this is the third such prize after Jiangsu's second prize for its "Management Optimization of the Structure of Postal Transportation Network" and Guangdong's first prize for its "Construction and Management of Network Post".
