Post Routes Operation
In 2001, the total traffic of China Post C1 trunk reached 170.4 billion bag kilometers, representing an increase of 1.8% over the previous year, in which the road traffic increased by 17.9% and the
air traffic increased by 3.5%.
In 2001, great strategic adjustment and reform were enforced in China Post express trunk lines. Firstly, marked by the successful establishment of the ten air post routes from Shanghai to Beijing, Chengdu, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Fuzhou, Wuhan, Xi'an, Qingdao, etc. on March 28 and September 12, a self-distributed air express network had taken a basic shape. Secondly, marked by dIe acceleration of the internal processing, transportation and delivery of mails as well as the express mails on July 1, the self-automobile-transportation routes became more proper. 117 night post trunk routes had been set up in the whole network. After the acceleration, the next-day express mail delivery rate between provincial capitals increased by 17%. Thirdly, due to the train acceleration in Oct. 21, China Post further optimized the post returns. In the year of 2001, we attempted to arrange special parcel trains to transport mails between Beijing and Shanghai, Beijing and the basis of the regional express network with the seven C1 mail centers as the core.
The structure of the mail center system was further improved. 77 C1 and C2 mail centers began to operate formally. We had promoted efficiency by cutting down the staff. We also made progress in recognizing and improving periodical sorting and distribution and the 201 mail centers will become the collecting and distributing centers instead of the county post offices. We began to transform the mail processing mode from the tradition quality classification into three-shape classification, that is, letter shape, flat shape and parcel shape.
The mail centers have strived to enhance the development of direct delivery service. In 2001, the income from the service reached RMB 580 million yuan, 53% over the last year. The establishment of the direct service information platform laid a solid foundation for the development of the joint operation in the whole network and logistic service. The administration of mail centers began to transform from close manufacturing into open manufacturing, which will absolutely benefit the exploration of China Post into logistics field.
We have made great achievements in optimizing the internal operation and reforming the employment methods in the mail centers. The expenditure of the 25 provincial mail centers has decreased form RMB 2.47 billion yuan in 2000 to 2.3 billion yuan in 2001, 170 million yuan lower than the last year. We also made essential progress in developing two sub-systems of the postal comprehensive network. We began to use computers to draw out bills for mail delivery and loading on the three trunk routes including Beijing to Guangzhou, Beijing to Shanghai and Beijing to Harbin. The whole distance time schedule for the express mails and letters between different mail centers was drawn by computer for the first time. Letter plates were used in delivering ordinary mails between the 77 C1 and C2 mail centers.
